Greek fires: Distrubing links between forest fires and property development must be ended
Following
the adoption by the European Parliament today of a resolution on natural
disasters in Europe and this summer's forest fires in Greece, Swedish
Green MEP Carl Schlyter, said:
"The tragedy of this summer's fires in Greece has brought sharply into focus the disturbing links between these 'natural' disasters and property development in the Mediterranean. At a time of heightened awareness about the consequences of climate change, it is a disgrace that property developers should be allowed to take advantage of these disasters by building on former forest land.
"It is important that the EU should assist Member States affected by these disasters, however it is equally important that those Member States in receipt of EU aid ensure that the funds are used as intended. Member States must ensure that all burned forest land remains forest land (i.e. is reforested) and does not fall victim to property developers. We welcome the support of a majority of MEPs for Green amendments calling for compulsory conditions for aid and the return of Community aid in case of improper use.
"MEPs also supported a Green amendment calling on the Greek parliament not to approve any changes to the Greek constitution, which would allow the rezoning of former forest land for development. The origin of this amendment was from the Greek Greens, who have succeeded in having an impact on EU politics through their cooperation with the European Green Party despite not yet having an elected member."
